Discussion
Evidentiary scope
In April 1969 the plant stood 2.5 to 3.0 metres tall in a garden on the Plaza de Armas of Santiago, where it grew as a weed. It does not say whether the plant was sown or self-seeded, what it was used for, or where its seed came from. The accession is classified Feral, as other accessions are whose labels record a weed habitat. A single sheet does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. No conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read from the Naturalis image (L.1592596, the 1,100 × 1,920 pixel rendering, the same file as the page image).
- Printed heading RIJKSHERBARIUM, LEIDEN / (Herb. Lugd. Bat.); stamp GESUBLIMATISEERD; № 407588.
- Typed label PLANTS OF CHILE / No. 2664 / Cannabis sativa L. / Rank herb 2.5 - 3.0 m. tall growing as weed in garden. / Prov. Santiago: Santiago. Plaza de Armas / Coll. Timothy Plowman / Date: 9 Apr. 1969.
- Other barcode label Nationaal Herbarium Nederland L 0815755; the figure 600640 stamped at the lower right; a blank Loan nr. line at the lower left.
The Smithsonian duplicate (US 2710606) has not been imaged, and its label has not been read. Its catalogue entry gives the country and no locality.
Georeferencing
The label names the Plaza de Armas of Santiago, a single square, so it identifies a collection point. The coordinate is Wikidata's for the square (Q602232: −33.43797, −70.6504), stored at two decimals as −33.44, −70.65. The label gives no altitude, so there is no elevation to check the point against, and the elevation field is left empty.
Editorial treatment
One accession covers the gathering, which survives as two sheets. The Leiden sheet is the primary one because it is imaged and its catalogue carries the locality; the Smithsonian sheet is the duplicate. The title follows the label's number. The collector field takes T.C. Plowman: the label signs Timothy Plowman, Naturalis indexes Plowman, TC and the Smithsonian Timothy C. Plowman. His full name is Timothy Charles Plowman (1944–1989), and the 1969 date falls within his life. The province field takes Santiago Metropolitan Region, in which the label's Prov. Santiago now lies.
