Why Northern Antioquia is a growing area

  • Víctor Manuel Patiño's Plantas cultivadas y animales domésticos en América equinoccial, vol. IV (1969), p. 405: since 1945 the Colombian press has reported small clandestine plots of marijuana from time to time, especially on the Atlantic coast, in the north of Antioquia and in the Valle del Cauca. He names no municipality.
  • The Ministry of Defence's open dataset, Erradicación, lists 9 entries of marijuana eradicated in the four municipalities between 23 February 2007 and 15 December 2017, 25.81 hectares in all (downloaded 4 November 2026). Eradication of a crop is evidence that it was grown where it was eradicated.
  • The status is Active: the entries run to 2017. No source says growing in the area has ended.

The name

All four municipalities are in the north of the department, and the title is a plain description. Patiño's "north of Antioquia" names no place, so the border follows the eradication entries. The area is not the whole of the north: municipalities with no marijuana entries, among them Angostura, which lies between Yarumal and Campamento, are outside it.

Extent and border

  • The map border is the union of the four municipalities as drawn in OpenStreetMap (relations 1324947 Valdivia, 1316182 Anorí, 1343280 Yarumal, 1316175 Campamento), simplified; about 2,930 km², the figure in the infobox. The four form one continuous shape.
  • The dataset gives no vereda, so the border takes in the whole of each municipality.
  • The point in the infobox is the centre of the border, not a field.

  • Ministry of Defence, Erradicación (open dataset). Rows for Antioquia with crop type marihuana. By municipality: Valdivia 20.00 ha (4 rows: 15 ha on 23 February 2007, 2 on 10 November 2007, 1 on 28 November 2015, 2 on 11 January 2016); Anorí 3.20 (2 rows, March 2012 and October 2015); Campamento 1.40 (1 row, October 2017); Yarumal 1.21 (2 rows, March 2014 and December 2017). The 15-hectare row is the largest for Antioquia in the dataset. The figures on the page are sums of the rows, rounded.
  • Patiño (1969). Read in the Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango digitisation, p. 405, in the entry on Cannabis sativa as a drug plant.

Not used

  • Marijuana eradicated in other municipalities of the north and north-east of the department is outside the area: Amalfi (2.0 hectares, 2015–2016), Segovia (2.0, 2015), Nechí (4.0, 2014), Sabanalarga (0.8, 2020) and San Andrés de Cuerquia (0.3, 2013 and 2020).
  • Reports that name Antioquia without a place are not used for the area: a "sea of marijuana" found in the department, in Cervantes Angulo's book of 1980 (pp. 326–327), and crops found in Antioquia in 1968 (Sáenz Rovner 2007, p. 220).
