Page scope
Northern Afghanistan is a Growing Region: a named cultivation region above Growing Areas. It covers the provinces of the surveys' Northern region (Baghlan, Balkh, Bamyan, Faryab, Jowzjan, Samangan and Sar-e Pol), less their districts in the Hindu Kush growing region. Balkh is its growing area.

Discussion
Why the region is on the map
- The cannabis surveys of the Afghan Ministry of Counter Narcotics and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (2009 to 2012) report cultivation by province and gather the provinces into six regions: Central, Eastern, North-eastern, Northern, Southern and Western (2010 survey, Table 1, p. 13; the same grouping in 2011, Table 1, p. 13).
- Cannabis was found in Baghlan and Balkh in 2009, 2010 and 2011, in Faryab in 2010 and 2011 (insignificant in 2009), and in Jawzjan in 2009 (2010, Table 1; 2011, Table 1).
- The 2010 survey groups the Northern and North-eastern regions for its yield estimates and calls their resin powder Mazari or Balkhi garda (p. 26).
Growing status
The status is Active: the surveys found cannabis grown in the region's provinces from 2009 to 2011. No source read says that growing in the region has ended.
How the border is drawn
- The border is a proxy drawn on administrative units: the seven provinces (OpenStreetMap province relations, fetched 19 October 2026).
- Baghlan's Andarab, Khost wa Fereng, Farang wa Gharu, Khinjan, Dih Salah and Puli Hisar districts and Bamyan's Shibar district lie in the Hindu Kush and belong to that growing region.
- The region takes in the existing border of each of its growing areas where that border and the province line differ by a few square kilometres.
- The union is about 105,300 km², the figure in the infobox.
- The grouping of provinces is the surveys' own, used for their regional figures; it is not a physical region, and the article says whose grouping it is.
- The border is not drawn from accession or news points.
Accessions inside the border
- Seven seed accessions are filed under the region: six from Balkh, through the Balkh growing area, and KHA-AFG-JOW-0120180001, which the seller places near Sheberghan in Jowzjan, with no area.
- No herbarium sheet recorded on the wiki lies inside the border.
