This news item is about the start of Operation Condor, a campaign of crop destruction, and is filed as an eradication event. The source reports no destruction on the day itself.
Sources not used
This news item rests on one scholarly account: Adela Cedillo, Operation Condor, the War on Drugs, and Counterinsurgency in the Golden Triangle (1977–1983), Kellogg Institute Working Paper 443 (University of Notre Dame, May 2021), pp. 8–9 and 14. Historians name the Mexican campaigns differently: Carlos A. Pérez Ricart writes that in Mexico the earlier campaign was called Operation Canador.
Map pin
The pin is the city of Culiacán, where the operation was launched with the parade. It does not mark a sprayed field: the source says only that Condor first targeted the Golden Triangle.
