Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The accession rests on two sources: the department's printed inventory entry for plant introduction 38466 (Inventory No. 39 (1917), pp. 130, 133) and the entry for PI 38466 in GRIN-Global, the database of the National Plant Germplasm System, as it stood on 27 October 2026. The inventory gives the collector, his number, the date, the city and a Chinese name. GRIN-Global states that the lot "no longer exists and can not be requested", so the page gives the lot as gone. No conservation priority is assigned.
Identifier
The identifier NPG-CHN-SNX-0119140001 follows the wiki's seed-accession grammar: holder, ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, province segment, month, year, sequence. The department's own number for the lot is PI 38466.
NPGstands for the National Plant Germplasm System of the United States Department of Agriculture, whose database, GRIN-Global, carries the department's plant introductions.CHNis the ISO code for China.SNXstands for Shaanxi.- Month
01: January, the month the seed was gathered. - Year 1914 is the year the seed was gathered.
0001is the lot's place, in plant-introduction order, among the holder's lots from the same country, province, month and year.
Classification
The note reports the hemp's fibre and its name but does not say it was grown around the city or by whom, so the accession is classified Unknown.
Collectors and donors
The inventory heads the consignment "Collected by Mr. Frank N. Meyer", and GRIN-Global lists him as collector, so he is given as collector.
Name
The note gives the Chinese name as Ma tzu and glosses it as "hempseed"; it is entered as the local name.
Location and georeferencing
The inventory names Sianfu, today's Xi'an, and nothing finer. The point 34.26, 108.94 is the point OpenStreetMap gives for the city of Xi'an (relation 3226004), a locality georeference for the place the source names, not a collection point. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 10 km, the radius of today's central city, larger than the walled city of 1914. The province is the one GRIN-Global gives.
Dates
The collection date, 24 January 1914, is the one both sources give. The department received the consignment on 8 June 1914, the lot's received date.
