Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The catalogues give a place, a year and a number. They record no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Georeferencing

The point 0.22, 9.56 is the middle of the Gabon Estuary, OpenStreetMap relation 10646744, a body of water of about 753 km² that the Komo River enters; the middle falls inside it. The catalogues name the estuary, an English Gaboon River and a French Estuaire du Gabon, and no place on its shores. It is an area point for the estuary, not the place the plant was gathered, and its shores reach 40.3 km from the middle at the farthest. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 16 km.

Editorial treatment

Date. The museum's catalogue gives a span of 1859 to 1863; Tropicos gives 1861 for the same number, and the title takes it.

Collector. Gustav Mann (1836–1916), a German botanist and gardener of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, who collected in West Africa (English Wikipedia, Gustav Mann), fits both catalogues' collector; the page gives the catalogue's initial only.

Image. No image of the sheet was read for this page; its values are the holder's catalogue's. The museum's image of the sheet is published under CC BY 4.0 but could not be retrieved for this page (GBIF's image cache does not hold it, and the museum's own server refused the connection); the label has not been read.

Source discrepancies

  • The museum's catalogue gives a span of 1859 to 1863; Tropicos gives 1861.
