Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label records cannabis plants up to five feet tall among Artemisia on open banks at Tsalimape, 7,000 feet, in August 1949, with the colour of the flowers. It names no use, variety or local name, and does not say whether the plants were wild, escaped or cultivated. The accession is classified Other. A single sheet does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. No conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from the Edinburgh image (E00150669, 2757 × 4096 pixels).

  • Typed label on blue card. EX HERBARIO MUSEI BRITANNICI / FLORA OF BHUTAN / Cannibis sativa L. / Locality Tsalimape / Altitude 7,000ft. Date 23.8.1949 / Up to 5ft. Corolla pale yellowish green / Among Artemisia sp. on open banks. / & Hicks typed above the printed F. LUDLOW & G. SHERRIFF / No. 19635.
  • Cannibis is the label's spelling.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted. No place named Tsalimape, or spelled Tsalimaphe, Tsalumaphe or Tshalumaphey, was found in Wikidata, OpenStreetMap or GeoNames, and the label names no district. The province field is therefore empty. Cooper 1486 (1914) was collected at Chalimarphé in Timpu, also at 7,000 feet; the two names may be spellings of one place in the Thimphu area, but no source read for these pages says so, and the province is not filled from that resemblance.

Editorial treatment

The title and collector field take the lead collector, F. Ludlow; the collector number reads Ludlow, F. et al. 19635 because the label names three collectors. The catalogue gives the first two as Frank Ludlow and George Sherriff. Hicks is not otherwise identified on the label or in the catalogue, so the page names him by surname only and does not link him.

Source discrepancies

  • Collectors. Label: F. Ludlow & G. Sherriff with & Hicks added. Catalogue: Ludlow, Frank & Sherriff, George.
  • Name. Label: Cannibis sativa L. Catalogue: Cannabis sativa L.

The article reports both collectors' lists and quotes the label's spelling.
