Evidentiary scope
The label gives the local name Liamba and calls the plant Chanvre indigène (native hemp) at a named village, in 1893: a plant of the place, under its local name. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1893. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. It does not say whether the plant was sown or what it was used for. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from GBIF's cached copy of the museum's image (1600 × 2433 pixels); the page states only what the two readings agree.
- Collector's label: printed SOCIÉTÉ D'ÉTUDES & D'EXPLOITATION DU CONGO FRANÇAIS / COLLECTIONS RECUEILLIES PAR Mr HENRI LECOMTE / handwritten Liamba. / Chanvre indigène / Village de Coumby. / Xbre 93.
- Museum label: printed HERB. MUS. PARIS. / handwritten Cannabis sativa L.
Georeferencing
No point is given. Coumby does not resolve to one place. It was not found in OpenStreetMap under that spelling or as Koumbi; as Kumbi it names more than one village in the south of the Republic of the Congo, two of them about 168 km apart (nodes 633119885 and 1168730806), and the label does not say which, if either, is meant.
Editorial treatment
Collector. The label names Mr Henri Lecomte. Paul Henri Lecomte (1856–1934), a French botanist at the museum in Paris who took part in expeditions to Africa (English Wikipedia, Paul Henri Lecomte), fits it; the collector field takes the label's initial.
Local name. Liamba is entered as the label writes it. The wiki's page on diamba treats liamba as one of its related forms.
Country. The label's French Congo covered today's Republic of the Congo and Gabon. The catalogue files the sheet under the Republic of the Congo; with the village unresolved, the page keeps that.
Source discrepancies
- The label writes Village de Coumby; the catalogue gives Village Coumby.
