Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The labels give the place, the altitude, the date and the collector. They name no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00557884, 1,011 × 1,440 pixels).
- Field form (printed FLORA OF CHINA, typed): Field No. K.730 / Date 22/7/1930 / Locality Tiehling, Fengtien / Altitude 150m. / Family Moraceae / Name Cannabis sativa l. / Collector H.W.Kung.
- Herbarium label (printed HERBARIUM ACADEMIÆ NATIONALIS PEKINENSIS / FLORA CHINENSIS, typed): Cannabis sativa Linn. / Fengtien: Tiehling July 22, 1930 / Leg. H.W.Kung (730). Det. W.Y.Hsia.
- Packet marked 730; a pink tag, its pencil not read. HOPEI province stamp under Hg Cl2; stamped number 421614.
The two readings agree.
Georeferencing
Tiehling is Tieling (铁岭), the only town of that name in the old Fengtien province, which was renamed Liaoning in January 1929. The point 42.29, 123.84 is Tieling's place node in OpenStreetMap (node 244082066, in Yinzhou District, the old county town). SRTM gives 66 m there against the label's 150 m, a gap of about 85 m on the Liao plain. The label may mean the old county as much as the town; the point stands for the town, not a spot within it. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 5 km.
Editorial treatment
Collector. The collector field keeps the label's H. W. Kung. He is Kung Hsien-wu (孔宪武, 1897–1984): the Harvard botanist index gives the name and dates, and Chinese Wikipedia gives H.W.Kung as his standard form. The prose links Kung Hsien-wu.
Province. The label's Fengtien is the older name of Liaoning; the province field takes Liaoning.
Elevation. The elevation field stores the label's 150 m.
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
Source discrepancies
- The province stamp on the sheet reads HOPEI; the labels place the gathering in Fengtien (Liaoning).
