Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The labels give the place, the altitude, the date and the collector. They name no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00557870, 996 × 1,440 pixels).
- Field form (printed FLORA OF CHINA, typed): Field No. K.2091 / Date 13/8/1931 / Locality Changchailingtzu, Chingpohu, Kirin / Altitude 300m. / Family Moraceae / Collector H.W.Kung.
- Herbarium label (HERBARIUM ACADEMIÆ NATIONALIS PEKINENSIS / FLORA CHINENSIS, typed): Cannabis sativa Linn. / Kirin: Chingpohu, Changchailingtzu Aug. 13, 1931 / Leg. H.W.Kung (2091). Det. W.Y.Hsia.
- Tag (printed, pink): Coll. Hsien-Wu Kung / No. 2091. KIRIN province stamp; Hg Cl2; stamped number 421613.
The two readings agree.
Georeferencing
Chingpohu is read as Jingpo Lake (镜泊湖; hu is lake), the lake on the upper Mudan River in Ning'an, Mudanjiang; the identification rests on the name and on its place in the Kirin province of 1931, and no source read gives the label's spelling. Changchailingtzu was not found in Wikidata or in OpenStreetMap around the lake. The point 43.93, 128.83 lies inside the lake's outline in OpenStreetMap (relation 17537059, about 75 km²); the outline's centroid falls outside the long, narrow lake, so a point inside it is used. SRTM gives 343 m there against the label's 300 m. The lake runs about 34 km from end to end, and the point stands for the lake, not the place on its shore where the plant was gathered. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 30 km.
Editorial treatment
Province. The label's Kirin was the province of 1931: Ning'an County, where the lake lies, belonged to it until December 1934 and is now in Heilongjiang. The province field takes Heilongjiang, the present province of the place.
Collector. The collector field keeps the label's H. W. Kung; the tag's Hsien-Wu Kung is the full form. He is Kung Hsien-wu (孔宪武, 1897–1984): the Harvard botanist index gives the name and dates, and Chinese Wikipedia gives H.W.Kung as his standard form. The prose links Kung Hsien-wu.
Elevation. The elevation field stores the label's 300 m.
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue places the sheet in Jilin, the present-day form of the label's Kirin; the lake the label names is now in Heilongjiang.
