Why the area is on the map
- The Real Seed Company's listing for Highland Lao #7 (a line from Bolikhamsai): ganja growing "around towns such as Thakaek grew rapidly through the 1980s", after crackdowns across the Mekong in northern Isan, and "most of this cultivation has now moved into the highlands of Bolikhamsai".
- This is the only statement read that places cannabis growing in the province. It is a seed company's account, given without dates or sources of its own, and the article attributes it.
Growing status
The status is Historical: the one account of growing in the province concerns the 1980s. The company writes that most of the growing has moved to Bolikhamsai, which does not say that it has ended in Khammouane, so the page is not marked as no longer grown. No source read reports cannabis grown in the province since 2000. The account gives no year, so the infobox carries no years of growing.
Seizures
Police seizures in the province concern cannabis carried through it, not grown there, and are not evidence of growing:
- Báo Hà Tĩnh (27 June 2022): on 21 June 2022 police at Phonkho village, Hinboun district, seized 939 kilograms of dried, pressed cannabis in 24 sacks as it was being loaded onto a boat to cross the Mekong to Thailand. The report does not say where the cannabis was grown.
How the border is drawn
- The border is a proxy, drawn on one administrative unit: Khammouane Province (OpenStreetMap relation 5831658), about 16,700 km², the figure in the infobox.
- The account speaks of "towns such as Thakaek" and names no other place, so the border takes the province, the smallest unit that holds Thakhek and the towns the account leaves unnamed.
- The border is not drawn from accession or news points. No accession comes from the province.
The name
The page takes the bare name of the province, in the spelling of the province page. Khammuan and Khammuane are other spellings; the seller writes Thakaek for Thakhek.
Sources
The Real Seed Company listing was read in a copy saved on 16 September 2026; the company's site refuses scripted requests. Searches in English, Lao, Thai, Vietnamese and French for reports of cannabis fields in the province, and for colonial-era accounts, found none. The herbarium sheet Thorel 3009 names a place Kemarotte (catalogue Kamarath) on the Mekong expedition; the place is not identified and the label does not say that the plant was cultivated, so the sheet is not used.
