Discussion

Sources

  • Sandakelum, Nallaperuma and Herapathdeniya (2025), Journal of Postgraduate Institute of Indigenous Medicine 1(1): 80–96 (University of Colombo). The masthead lists Nallaperuma first; the paper's own recommended citation puts Sandakelum first, and the article follows it.
  • The pharmacopoeia is cited from this paper. The paper calls it the "Sri Lankan Ayurveda Pharmacopeia" in the text, and its reference list gives the 1961 work as Department of Ayurveda, Ayurveda Aushadha Sangrahaya, vol. 1, part 3.

Is it cannabis?

The paper's ingredient table gives the plant as Cannabis sativa L. (Cannabaceae), Sinhala kansa, Sanskrit bhanga, seeds and leaves. The cannabis for the study batches came from the Ayurveda Drug Corporation, Nawinna, which authenticated it.

Where the sources differ

  • The paper's introduction says the product has 25% cannabis and 75% herbal ingredients by weight. Its method adds powdered cannabis equal in weight to the herbal mixture (115 g each), which is half. The article gives the method's figures as what the study batches contained.

Name

The paper writes Kameshwari Modakaya and Kameshwari Modaka; the product is Sanjeewani (masthead Sanjeewanie) Kameshwari Rasayanaya. The sources cited here do not say whether this is the same formula as the kāmeśvara modaka of the Sanskrit compendia, so the two are treated apart.
