- The Ayurvedic Formulary of India, Part I (2nd revised English edition, 2003), formula 3:12, p. 39, from the Wellcome Collection scan. The entry quotes the Bhaiṣajyaratnāvalī, grahaṇīrogādhikāra 250–255, and lists 46 ingredients: white cumin powder 384 g, roasted vijayā (bhaṅgā) seed 192 g, and 44 drugs at 12 g each, as the verse's "one karṣa each" sets them. The English names of the indications are the Formulary's own, from its list of diseases and their approximate English equivalents (pp. 461–477); it gives none for viṣamajvara. The foreword describes the 444 formulations of Part I.
Is it cannabis?
The verse has vijayābījaṃ bharjitaṃ, roasted vijayā seed. The Formulary glosses it "vijayā (bhaṅgā)", a seed, and its list of drugs (p. 309) identifies vijayā with Cannabis sativa. Harītakī, the commonest other reading of vijayā (see Vijaya), is a separate ingredient of the same formula, as one of the three myrobalans.
Not stated
- The Bhaiṣajyaratnāvalī is the earliest source cited, and none of the sources cited here dates it.
- The formula is not in the tables of Tavhare and Acharya (2017), which survey formulations with bhaṅgā as an ingredient.
