Evidentiary scope
The place name Belfort has not been located, and the catalogue's own gloss [= Bellfort] does not help. The catalogue gives a collector, a number, a date and a locality. It is a single gathering and shows neither a continuing population nor a living germplasm holding, so it supports neither a landrace nor a feral classification. The accession is classified Other. No conservation priority is assigned.
Georeferencing
No coordinate is carried. The one GBIF publishes falls in a different country from the one the label names, so it cannot be used without prejudging the question above.
Editorial treatment
The label writes the month as the Roman numeral I., which is January, and the catalogue reads it the same way.
The collectors are given on the label as Dr. Jacottet und Frl. Jacottet, a man and an unmarried woman of the same surname. GBIF renders them L. Jacottet and Hélène Jacottet. Neither is wikilinked, because the identification is not settled.
The image carries no licence and is used under a fair-use rationale.
Source discrepancies
This accession's country is a judgement and may be wrong. Three sources disagree:
- the label reads Kapkolonie: Belfort, with a pre-printed Transvaal struck out;
- GBIF codes the country CH, Switzerland, which is where the herbarium is and not where the plant grew;
- the coordinate GBIF publishes, -30.180278, 28.72, falls inside Lesotho.
The accession follows the label and files the sheet under South Africa. The coordinate is not carried, because adopting it would assert the country the label denies. If the sheet turns out to be Basotho, the accession should move to a Lesotho register: the collectors were missionaries of the Paris Evangelical Missionary Society, which worked in Basutoland, and a sheet of the mission's collecting labelled with a Cape place is exactly the kind of thing that gets mis-sorted in either direction. This has not been settled and should not be settled from the catalogue.
