Evidentiary scope
The label gives the place, the month and the collectors. It names no habitat, use or note on cultivation, and the Temple of Heaven's grounds could hold planted, cultivated or self-sown plants: the label does not say which. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PEM0000835, 1,050 × 1,440 pixels).
- Label (printed 北京醫學院藥學系分類標本室, by hand): 學名 Cannabis sativa L., a male sign in pencil after it / 中名 大麻 / 產地 北京天壇 / 採期 1943年8月 / 採集者 石戸谷勉, 錢德亮 / 訂名者 (blank) / 備考 (blank) / 第 號 (blank).
- A blue box stamp, mostly unprinted, not read. Barcode 北京大学药学院中药标本馆 (PEM) / PEM 0000835; a second label, PEM_01616.
The readings agree on the place, the date and the order of the two names. One reads the first name as 石谷勉, three characters, each uncertain, and the other as 石戶谷勉, four; a third look at the image reads four characters, the second a small 戸. They differ on the second name, read as 錢德亮 and as 錢信忠; a third look favours 錢德亮, which the catalogue gives.
Georeferencing
北京天壇 is the Temple of Heaven, in Dongcheng District, Beijing (Wikidata Q125445). The point 39.88, 116.41 is Wikidata's point for it; the middle of the Temple of Heaven Park in OpenStreetMap (way 24824550) lies about 0.5 km to the south-west. The label names the grounds and no place within them, and the uncertainty takes in the park and the rounding of the point. It is a point for the temple's grounds, not the place the plant was gathered. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 2 km.
Editorial treatment
Title. The label gives no number, so the title takes the first collector's surname, Ishidoya, and s.n.
Collectors. The collector field takes both names, in the label's order. 石戸谷勉 is the name of Tsutomu Ishidoya, a Japanese botanist of medicinal plants, who became a professor at the Medical College of Peking University in 1942 and returned to Japan in 1946 (Japanese Wikipedia); the label is printed for that college's pharmacy department under its later name. Japanese Wikipedia and Wikidata give his birth year as 1884 and the Harvard botanist index as 1891; all three give 1958 for his death. The identification rests on the full name and the college, and the prose links Tsutomu Ishidoya. No source on 錢德亮 was found, and the name is not linked.
The label. The Medical College of Peking University became the independent Beijing Medical College (北京医学院) in 1952 (Chinese Wikipedia), and the label is printed under that name, so it was written at least nine years after the date it gives.
Holder. Index Herbariorum lists the herbarium coded PEM under Beijing Medical University, and the repository field takes that name; the sheet's barcode label names the herbarium as that of Peking University's School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (北京大学药学院中药标本馆).
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
Source discrepancies
- The Chinese Virtual Herbarium gives the collectors as 钱德亮 and others; the label names 石戸谷勉 first and 錢德亮 second.
