Page scope
Idukki treats the cannabis growing area of Idukki District in Kerala: the forest plantations reported from the 1990s, the High Range and its ganja, the decline reported in 2016 and 2017, and the trade under the Idukki name. The district as an administrative unit is treated at Idukki District. The region it belongs to is the Western Ghats; the other growing area of the region is Attappadi. The Mathikettan Shola is named on the page from its source and has no page of its own.

Discussion

Why the area is mapped

  • P. R. J. Pradeep (Down To Earth, 15 April 1994) lists "the Idukki region, with its Periyar Wild Life Reserves" first among the main centres in Kerala.
  • Outlook ("Guns 'N Ganja") reports several thousand acres of fields in the district's revenue forests and fields in the Periyar reserve at Thekkady.
  • Bobins Abraham (Indiatimes, 2016) writes about the High Range of Idukki, and about growers going back to cannabis in 2016 with most plantations inside the Mathikettan Shola.
  • A seed lot collected in the district in 2015 is RSC-IND-KER-0120150001, with its reproductions RSC-IND-KER-0120150001-R1 and RSC-IND-KER-0120150001-R2.

Growing status

The status is Active: cultivation in the district is reported in 2016, and the seed lot was collected there in 2015. Two sources report a decline. Onmanorama (26 July 2016) says the district had "shaken off its tag as a ganja producing region"; Kerala's excise officials said in 2017 that there was no mass cultivation "these days, even in Idukki". Neither says that growing ended, and Abraham reports plantations in the district later in 2016. The article gives the decline in the sources' words.

How the border is drawn

  • The border is Idukki District in OpenStreetMap (administrative relation 1819274), simplified, about 4,500 km². It is a proxy: the sources speak of Idukki as a district or a region, and the places they name (the Periyar reserve at Thekkady, Munnar, the Mathikettan Shola) are in the district.
  • The High Range has no surveyed boundary and is not drawn separately.
  • The map point (9.85, 77.05) is the centre of the district; the border is not drawn from it or from any accession or news point.

Sources

  • Indiatimes. The article's page now carries the date 24 January 2017 in its metadata and 9 March 2026 on screen. A copy of the full text was posted on another site on 26 October 2016, and Herb.co cited the article on 1 November 2016, so it was first published by 26 October 2016. The article cites it with the year 2016. Its "this year" for the failed cardamom crop is 2016.
  • Outlook, "Guns 'N Ganja". The page carries no issue date; its text reports destruction "between '90 and '97".
  • Press. Every article cited was read in full.

Where the sources disagree

  • Decline or return. Onmanorama (26 and 27 July 2016) reports cultivation in Idukki cut by receding forests and enforcement; Abraham reports that some people went back to growing cannabis in 2016. The article gives both.
