  • The Farmers' Daily report of 1 November 2021 (Zhou Hanwei), reprinted by the People's Political Consultative Daily, names 火麻汤 with hemp-seed oil and congee as everyday Bama dishes.
  • The 1980 nutrition survey (Acta Academiae Medicinae Zhongshan 1(4): 383–390) describes the seed as the county's customary oil crop (p. 384) and its preparation as a milky liquid for cooking vegetables (p. 385). It does not use the name 火麻汤.
  • Brand and Zhao (2017) mention Bama's reputation for hemp seed as a longevity food.

Is it cannabis?

  • The 1980 survey identifies 火麻仁 provisionally as Cannabis sativa L. and gives its fatty-acid analysis.

Kind and plant part

  • Dish. Seed.
  • First recorded: no year is given. The 1980 survey describes the preparation of the seed for cooking but not the soup by name.
  • Still made: yes (2021 report).
  • The survey describes the elderly people of five communes of the county; it does not name their ethnic groups, so no people is given.
  • The health and longevity claims in the 2021 report are left out: they are promotional and not about the dish.
