Evidentiary scope
The sheet places the plant in southern Morocco during the 1871 journey of Hooker, Ball and Maw. If Hort. Marocco is read as a garden in the city, it records a plant growing in a garden, which implies cultivation without saying so. The label gives no habitat, no use, no local name and no day. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned. It does not establish a landrace or a continuing population.
The 1878 account of the journey was read in full for this page. It does not name Cannabis, and its lists of the plants growing wild and planted in the garden of Ben Dreis, where the party lodged in the city, do not include hemp. John Ball's Spicilegium florae maroccanae (Journal of the Linnean Society, Botany 16, 1877–1878), the systematic account of the expedition's plants, has no Cannabis entry either. It was read in two independent scans (Commons). Neither source mentions this sheet, so the page draws only the journey's dates and place-names from them.
Label reading
Read from the Kew image at full resolution (7752 × 10320 pixels).
- Printed slip. SOUTH MAROCCO. / Coll. DR. HOOKER. April-May. 1871.
- Handwritten line after the printed locality. Hort. Marocco. The first word's last letter is a plain upright stroke with no bowl, which fits Hort. rather than Herb.; the reading is probable, not certain.
- Handwritten name at the head of the slip. Cannabis sativa L.
- Typed determination slip. Cannabis sativa L. / subsp. indica (Lam.) Small & Cronq. / E. Small, Canada Agriculture, Aug. 1975
- Stamp. ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS ★ KEW ★
- Pencil mark, upper left corner of the mount. Not read.
Georeferencing
The label names a region (South Marocco) and, by the reading above, gardens in the city of Marocco. A garden in a large walled city is not a collection point, and the reading of Hort. is not certain, so no coordinate is asserted. The infobox locality is Marrakesh and the province is Marrakesh Prefecture. If the handwritten word were Herb., it would name a herbarium series and not a place, and the locality would revert to the region.
The account of the journey places the party in the city from 3 to 8 May 1871. Ball's own Latin localities use the same form for the city's gardens: In horto irrigato Ben Dreis urbis Marocco (p. 514) and In hortos urbis Marocco introducta (p. 442).
Editorial treatment
The title takes the label's spelling Marocco, in the <Collector> s.n., <Locality> (<Year>) form used for unnumbered sheets. The infobox locality takes the modern name.
The collector field takes J.D. Hooker. The label prints DR. HOOKER. The account of the journey styles him Sir Joseph (then Dr.) Hooker (p. 1), and the International Plant Names Index gives Joseph Dalton Hooker, 1817–1911. The party also included Ball, Maw and the gardener Crump, so Coll. may name the leader of the expedition rather than the person who picked the plant.
GBIF dates the gathering to 1 April 1871, the first day of the label's span and the day the party left Southampton. The infobox stores the year.
The determination slip is dated August 1975. The International Plant Names Index places the combination subsp. indica (Lam.) E.Small & Cronquist in Taxon 25: 426 (1976), so the slip used the name about a year before it was published. The scientific name field follows the slip and the catalogue.
