Page scope
Hindu Kush Himalaya covers the Hindu Kush Himalaya as a region: its extent as the 2019 Hindu Kush Himalaya Assessment sets it out, its climate and elevation, and what is known of cannabis across the region as a whole. The mountain ranges within it (the Hindu Kush, Karakoram, Pamir and Himalayas) and the countries, provinces and valleys it contains have their own pages. Charas, hashish and the history of particular valleys are covered on their own pages and summarised here.

Discussion
Sources
- The Hindu Kush Himalaya Assessment (Springer, 2019; open access) was read in the publisher's chapter files. Chapter 1 (Sharma and others) gives the region's area, basins, population and the table of areas included (pp. 3–5); chapter 3 (Krishnan and others) the winter westerly disturbances and the summer monsoon (pp. 61–63); chapter 5 (Xu and others) the east–west moisture gradient, the elevation range and the share of farmland (pp. 133–135). Chapters 1, 3, 5 and 9 were searched for cannabis and do not mention it.
- ICIMOD's history page was read for the centre's founding and member countries.
- McPartland, Hegman and Long (2019) was read in its abstract on the publisher's page; the article is not open access. The page cites only what the abstract states.
- Ren and others (2021) was read in full in Europe PMC (PMC8284894).
- Chouvy (2019) was read in full on OpenEdition (EchoGéo 48).
- Kreutzmann (2026) was read in full in the CrossAsia repository.
Where the sources disagree
- The region's boundary. The assessment counts whole states and provinces in several countries (all of Assam and Tripura in India, for example). The page gives the assessment's table as the assessment gives it and does not redraw it.
- Centre of origin and domestication. McPartland and colleagues (2019) place the centre of origin of the genus on the north-eastern Tibetan Plateau from pollen evidence; Ren and colleagues (2021) place the first domestication of the crop in East Asia from genomes. The two address different questions, and the page states each with its source.
Not used
- The ICIMOD glacier inventory of 2011 (Bajracharya and Shrestha) was not read; the area figure comes from the 2019 assessment, which cites it.
- No peer-reviewed discussion of the HKH as a regional construct was found; a 1980s magazine critique of the centre's undefined region was not used.

No national borders except where they bound the shaded area.
