Evidentiary scope
The label records a female cannabis plant, one to two metres tall, among shrubs on a dry hillside above Tashigang in June 1979, and gives a Nepali name and an eastern Bhutanese name for it. The names are recorded as the collectors wrote them; the label does not say from whom they were taken, and it records no use. It does not say whether the plant was wild, escaped or cultivated. The accession is classified Other. The sheet does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. No conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read from the Edinburgh image (E00150666, 2758 × 4096 pixels).
- Typed label FLORA OF BHUTAN / Cannabis sativa L. ssp sativa / Tashigang, stream above town 27° 19' 91°34' / Amongst shrubs on dry hillside / Herb 1-2 m, female plant, Bango. (Nepali) Phagpa Nam (E Bhutan) / Alt. c. 1340 m / 18 June 1979 / Coll. A.J.C. Grierson & D.G. Long / No. 2029a.
- Pencil 153 above the label.
Georeferencing
The coordinate is the label's own, 27°19′ N, 91°34′ E, stored as 27.32, 91.57. OpenStreetMap places the point in Samkhar Gewog, Trashigang District. Its SRTM 30-metre elevation is 1,966 metres against the label's 1,340; the point, rounded to the minute, lies on the hillside about 2 kilometres south-east of the town, and the label's altitude is taken as the better guide to the collection place.
Editorial treatment
The local name field carries both names with the languages the label gives: Bango (Nepali); Phagpa Nam (eastern Bhutan). They are not transferred to the male sheet, 2029b, whose label does not give them. 2029a and 2029b are separate accessions because the collectors numbered the two plants separately and Edinburgh keeps two sheets. The title follows the label's lower-case 2029a; the catalogue writes 2029A. The province field takes Trashigang District.
