Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label names China, the collector and the collection of the Horticultural Society of London. It gives no place in China, no collecting date, and nothing on habitat, use or cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from the holder's original image (3291 × 5137 pixels), fetched from its image server.

  • Museum label (printed, completed by hand): HERB. MUS. PARIS. / Cannabis sativa (handwritten) / CHINE. / Mr FORTUNE. Collection de la Société Horticulturale de Londres. 1856, followed by one handwritten word that was not read (perhaps Tsz No or Jesz No).

Georeferencing

No point is given: the label names China and no place within it.

Editorial treatment

Date. 1856 is printed on the collection's label stock. It is not written as a collecting date. Fortune collected in China for the Horticultural Society of London from 1843 to 1846 (English Wikipedia), and the society sold its herbarium in 1856; the Flora Malesiana cyclopaedia of collectors records that a Fortune set of the society, collected in 1845, was bought by Planchon in 1856 and is now in the Paris herbarium. The sheet fits that set, but nothing on it ties it to the sale, so no date is stored and the title takes (by 1856).

Collector. The label gives Mr Fortune and the catalogue Fortune, R. He is Robert Fortune (1812–1880), the Scottish plant collector, commissioned by the Horticultural Society of London in 1843 to collect in China (English Wikipedia; Harvard botanist index). The collector field takes R. Fortune; the prose links Robert Fortune.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue gives the locality as s.loc. and the year 1856 as a remark, not as a date.
