Infobox fields
- Legal status year is left blank on purpose. Cannabis is illegal in Ethiopia, but the instrument that governs it has not been established from a reliable source. Aggregator sources name a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control and Regulation Proclamation of 1996. The country's medicines framework was recast by the Food and Medicine Administration Proclamation No. 1112/2019. No primary text has been found that settles which of these governs cannabis or how they relate, so no year is given rather than one taken from an aggregator.
- Enforcement reads "Prohibited". It no longer adds "no licensed sector documented": the field is stored as data, and an absence is not an enforcement level.
Sources
- van der Merwe 2005 (Transactions of the Royal Society of South Africa 60(2): 147–150) is cited for the water-pipe bowls in the same form as on South Africa, so the two pages agree. Whether it ranks the Ethiopian find as the earliest evidence of cannabis smoking in Africa is not established from its text, so the article no longer says so.
- ACE Seeds. The line's description, its "3rd generation pure Ethiopian sativa" genetics field and the report of about 2 per cent THCV are the vendor's own statements about its own seed, as recorded on ACE-ETH-UNK-0120160001. No independent characterisation of Ethiopian landrace material has been found.
Statements removed and why
- "Ethiopia holds the earliest direct physical evidence of cannabis smoking in Africa", and "the oldest direct evidence of cannabis smoking on the continent" in Conservation status: see Sources.
- "Against that antiquity the modern record on this wiki is thin", "The archaeological evidence is the history the wiki can state" and the Conservation status paragraph ("the widest [gap] in this corpus"): statements about the wiki's holdings, not about Ethiopia.
- That the Ethiopian finding "is the evidence usually cited for the antiquity of pipe smoking in Africa generally": no source is given for "usually cited", and the sentence described another page of the wiki.
- The Legal status paragraph on why no instrument is named: moved here (see Infobox fields). The statement that cannabis is illegal stays, with a citation-needed tag.
Open questions
- Legal status. A primary or reliable secondary source for the instrument under which cannabis is illegal.
- Demographics is a section stub. No sourced account of who uses cannabis in Ethiopia, in which communities, or of any ritual relationship to the plant has been found. Khat, not cannabis, is often described as the socially accepted stimulant in Ethiopia; that contrast needs a proper source before it goes into the article.
- Geography, Agriculture and Cultivation are section stubs. No source consulted names a cannabis growing region or describes where or how cannabis is grown, and the one accession gives no region, site or coordinate.
- Preparations and consumption is a section stub. The fourteenth-century evidence is for smoking and is under History; nothing has been found on modern preparations or patterns of use.
- Trade and commerce is a section stub. Reports that hashish reaches Ethiopia from Lebanon, Egypt and Morocco appear only in aggregator sources and have not been traced.
- Conservation status is a section stub. No source assessing Ethiopian cannabis populations has been found.
