Evidentiary scope
The label gives the collector, year, a broad region and the identification. It records no habitat, cultivation status, local name or use. The accession is classified as Other. It does not establish a continuing population, a feral population, a landrace or a living germplasm holding. No conservation priority is assigned.
Georeferencing
The label reads Northern Division. Walter Elliot was commissioner for the administration of the whole of the Northern Circars (northern sirkárs) and held that charge until 1854 (Dictionary of National Biography, vol. 17). The Northern Division is read here as that region, so the locality field uses Northern Circars. The label names no place within the region, so no province, district or coordinate is asserted.
Editorial treatment
The title keeps the label's Northern Division, following naming reference §8A. The locality field uses the region that name is read as.
The sheet carries two separately catalogued gatherings. E00248823 is Elliot's specimen on the left, with the 1852 label; E00248824 is Cleghorn's specimen on the right, with its 1859 label. The printed slip Herb. H. F. C. Cleghorn. Presented by Major Sprot, 1896 sits below the Elliot label. The presentation is not used as a date.
The label styles Elliot Honble. He was appointed to the council of the Governor of Madras in 1854 (Dictionary of National Biography), after the date on the label. The collector field uses the initials form W. Elliot.
Cleghorn s.n. (1859) describes this collection as coming from the Northern Circars. The label itself reads Northern Division.
