Evidentiary scope

The label is a printed form completed by hand and headed Madras Herb. It gives Hab. Northern Division (the habitat line, filled with a broad region), the collector W. Elliot and the date 1852. It records no habitat in the sense of ground or setting, no cultivation status, local name or use, so nothing shows whether the plant was cultivated, was growing wild or had escaped. The accession is classified Unknown. It does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The label reads Northern Division. Walter Elliot was commissioner for the administration of the whole of the Northern Circars (northern sirkárs) and held that charge until 1854 (Dictionary of National Biography, vol. 17), so the locality field uses Northern Circars. That region ran along the Bay of Bengal from about 15°40′ to 20°17′ N, across today's Andhra Pradesh and Odisha (English Wikipedia, Northern Circars). It spans two states, and the label names no place within it. An earlier version of this note gave no point because the label names no place within the region.

Editorial treatment

The title keeps the label's Northern Division, following naming reference §8A. The locality field uses the region that name is read as.

The sheet carries two separately catalogued gatherings. E00248823 is Elliot's specimen on the left, with the 1852 label; E00248824 is Cleghorn's specimen on the right, with its 1859 label. The printed slip Herb. H. F. C. Cleghorn. Presented by Major Sprot, 1896 sits below the Elliot label. The presentation is not used as a date.

The label styles Elliot Hon^ble. He was appointed to the council of the Governor of Madras in 1854 (Dictionary of National Biography), after the date on the label. The collector field uses the initials form W. Elliot.

Cleghorn s.n. (1859) describes this collection as coming from the Northern Circars. The label itself reads Northern Division.
