Why El Playón is a growing area

  • The only source for the area is the Ministry of Defence's open dataset, Erradicación. It lists 10 entries of marijuana eradicated in El Playón between 13 June 2012 and 6 October 2018, 13.9 hectares in all (downloaded 3 November 2026): one in 2012, one in 2013, seven in 2014 and one in 2018; the largest is 5.2 hectares. Eradication of a crop is evidence that it was grown where it was eradicated.
  • The status is Active: the entries run to 2018. No source says growing in the area has ended.

Extent and border

  • The map border is the municipality as drawn in OpenStreetMap (relation 1314968), simplified; about 460 km², the figure in the infobox. Where it meets the Provincia de Ocaña it follows that area's line.
  • The dataset gives no vereda, so the border takes in the whole municipality.
  • The point in the infobox is the centre of the border, not a field.

Sources

  • Ministry of Defence, Erradicación (open dataset). Rows for Santander with crop type marihuana: 19.84 hectares in all, of which El Playón 13.9; the rest in Rionegro (2.85, two rows, September 2013), Cimitarra (2.0, 2015), Sabana de Torres (1.0, 2012), Puerto Wilches and Lebrija (under a tenth of a hectare each). Each row gives a date, a municipality and an area, and no vereda.

Not used

  • Rionegro, El Playón's neighbour to the south, has two entries (2.85 hectares, both in September 2013). It is left out of the area: two entries in one month are thinner evidence than El Playón's ten over six years.
  • The National Police report of January 1973 (Britto 2020, ch. 5) names Santander among the departments of the Venezuelan border where marijuana was grown. It names no place in Santander and is not used for this area; the Cordillera Oriental (Colombia) page gives it.
  • The herbarium sheet Díaz-Rueda 4085 (2024), from San Vicente de Chucurí, records plants cultivated in gardens; that municipality is outside the area.
