Cordillera Oriental (the Eastern Cordillera) is a cannabis growing region on the eastern range of the Andes in Colombia. It is made up of two growing areas on the western side of the range: the Provincia de Ocaña, the western subregion of the department of Norte de Santander, and El Playón, in the department of Santander, which adjoin one another. In January 1973 a National Police report to the president named the border with Venezuela, in the departments of Santander, Boyacá and Arauca, as one of five regions of marijuana cultivation in Colombia.[1]:  In 2019 the anti-narcotics police counted Norte de Santander among the main marijuana-producing departments of the country.[2]

Geography

The region is made up of its two growing areas and takes in no land outside them. The Provincia de Ocaña covers the ten municipalities of the western subregion of Norte de Santander, from Cáchira in the south to Convención and Teorama in the north. El Playón, a single municipality of Santander north of Bucaramanga, borders Cáchira, so the region forms one continuous area of about 8,300 km². It does not take in the whole range: the rest of the Eastern Cordillera, in Santander, Boyacá, Cundinamarca and eastern Norte de Santander, lies outside the region.

Since 2000

After four hectares of marijuana were eradicated in Ocaña in 1998, eradication in Norte de Santander was occasional until 2013, when the area eradicated rose; the eradications were concentrated in municipalities with land in the foothills of the Cuchilla de Espartillo and the Páramo de Cinero.[3]: 47 In October 2014 the police found some 4,000 marijuana plants, with coca, growing among plantains on a farm four hours by road from the town of Ocaña.[4] By March 2016 marijuana crops had spread through rural Ábrego, in the Provincia de Ocaña, where marijuana had become one of the most common crops.[5]

About 47 hectares of marijuana were eradicated in the Provincia de Ocaña between 2012 and 2018, in five municipalities, and about 14 hectares in El Playón between 2012 and 2018.[6]
