Identifier
The accession identifier is EAG-TZA-KIL-0120200001, built from the holder, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, the province segment, the month, the year and the sequence number.
- Holder segment
EAGstands for East Africa Genes. - Year 2020 is the year of the first dated document that lists the line: the catalogue capture of 7 August 2020. No source gives a collection year, so the identifier takes the first attested year. It is a lower bound, not a collection date, and the collection date field is empty.
- Month 01 is the placeholder used when the year comes from first attestation.
- Province segment. The seller names Moshi, which lies in Kilimanjaro Region, so the province field is Kilimanjaro Region and the segment is
KIL. - Sequence
0001. First of the two Kilimanjaro Region lines in the order of the August 2020 capture, which lists Moshi before Kilimanjaro.
Sourcing
The catalogue page Pure African Strains (https://eastafricagenes.blog/pure-african-strains/) was read as it stood on 8 October 2026 and in twelve archived captures from 7 August 2020 to 4 June 2023 (https://web.archive.org/web/*/eastafricagenes.blog/pure-african-strains/). No capture between June 2023 and the current page could be read. The blog post of 11 July 2023 (https://eastafricagenes.blog/2023/07/11/cultivating-moshi-sativa-from-tanzania/) and the seller's Overgrow posts of 8 June 2023 (https://overgrow.com/t/east-africa-genes/113912/1), 20 July 2023 (https://overgrow.com/t/african-landraces-and-heirloom-thread/109426/198) and 10 September 2023 (https://overgrow.com/t/east-africa-genes-the-authentic-supplier-of-landrace-strains-from-east-african-countries/122685/1) were read.
By the seller's account the line reached it through a friend who buys from growers. No collector, farmer, collection site or collection date is named.
Typing
- Classification: Landrace. The seller's catalogue says that it got the line from a Tanzanian friend who buys it directly from growers, and its post of 2023 says that the farmers of Moshi are known for growing it. That places the source of the seed with growers around Moshi. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the seller's account, which names no grower, collection site or date. The account has not been checked against other sources. An earlier version of this note classified the line as Other, on the ground that a seller's account does not establish the class of the source population.
- Sourcing type: Unknown provenance. No source gives a chain of custody from a growing population to the seed on sale.
- Accession type is left empty: the sources do not say whether the seed on sale was gathered from growers or reproduced from earlier seed.
- Traits. The flavours and effects in the article are the seller's words. The catalogue's "Vegetation & Flowering" figure counts vegetative growth and flowering together, so it is reported in the article and not entered as a flowering time.
Georeferencing
The point -3.35, 37.34 is the town of Moshi, OpenStreetMap node 255602805 (place=city), in Moshi Urban, Kilimanjaro Region. It reverse-geocodes to Moshi, Moshi Urban, Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. The Moshi Urban boundary (relation 1243813, about 64 km²) reaches 6.4 km from the point. The seller ties the line both to the town and to the farmers around it, so the point marks the town, not a farm. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 8 km.
Relation to the Kilimanjaro line
The seller calls Moshi "a variation of the Kilimanjaro sativa" (Overgrow, 10 September 2023) and, in a 2026 blog post, says the two grow in similar conditions but differ in effect and in their lemon and earthy notes. The two are sold as separate lines and are entered as separate accessions; see EAG-TZA-KIL-0120200002.
Conservation priority
Not rated. The sources give nothing about the size or status of the source population.
