Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant on a fallow near the Fedulev settlement in June 1929. It gives no use. The accession is classified Feral because the label places the plant on fallow ground, land that had been under crops; the label does not say whether hemp had been grown there, and a single gathering does not establish a feral population. No conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3499 × 5020 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree.
- Printed label. } А. Дмитриева.
- By hand (two inks). Cannabis sativa L. / Тепловский (above the printed line) / бывш. Красновская вол., окрестн. Федулеева поселка. / [habitat] залежь. / 1929 г. 18/VI.
- Stamp. An oval violet stamp, upside down, …ГЕРБАРИЯ… / ДУБЛИКАТ; the rest not read.
- Small's slip (typed). Cannabis sativa L. / E. Small, Canada Agriculture, Aug. 1975.
- Readings that differ. The fallow was read Пырейная залежь (couch-grass fallow) and Тырсовая залежь (feather-grass fallow); a third look found Пырейная probable. The page says only a fallow. The raion was read Тепловский both times (once with Телловский allowed).
- The stamped number 230033 near the barcode is a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number.
- A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the herbarium, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The label names the environs of the Fedulev settlement in the former Krasnovskaya volost. Neither was found in OpenStreetMap under Федулеев, Федулев, Федуль and Fedulev (as a name, old name or alternative name) over West Kazakhstan and the wider Ural region, and the only Красновка found lies in Pavlodar Region, far from the Ural okrug. The Teplovsky raion's seat and extent were not found in any source; a village whose OpenStreetMap old name is Тепловский (Syrym Batyr, node 3066690473, in Baiterek District, West Kazakhstan Region) may be its seat, but that tag is the only evidence and it would place the raion, not the settlement. The Ural okrug of 1928 to 1930 is a historical unit, and no province is entered.
Editorial treatment
Classification. Both readings agree that the habitat is a залежь, a fallow: land that had been under crops and was resting. The accession is classified Feral on that ground; the label does not say whether hemp had been grown there.
Collector. The collector and determiner fields take the catalogue's A. Dmitrieva, the label's А. Дмитриева. No source read gives her full name, which is not linked.
Country. The Ural okrug was a unit of the Kazak ASSR; the country field follows the herbarium's filing under Kazakhstan.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue gives no locality; the label names the Teplovsky raion of the Ural okrug and the Fedulev settlement.
