Page scope

Chalal is the Locality page for the village of the Parvati Valley below Rasol, on the way up from the valley floor near Kasol. No accessions carry it as their locality. It is not the census village "Up Muhal Chhalala" near Manali.

Coordinates and elevation

• The infobox point, 32.0134, 77.2999, is the OpenStreetMap node "Chhalaal" (node 9235527994, place=hamlet). SRTM gives 1,567 m there. The node lies about 1.6 km west of the Kasol node (756382658) and about 2.2 km south-south-east of the Rasol node (9235540486).
• The infobox gives no elevation: no source read for this page gives a figure for Chalal.
• settlement_type = Village follows HimbuMail's "Chalal village"; OpenStreetMap tags the place as a hamlet (decision C1 of the drafting package).
• No admin_3 is set: no accession, census row or government page places Chalal in a tehsil (decision A1).

Census

• The 2011 census does not enumerate Chalal. A name search of all 326 Kullu rows of the village amenities spreadsheet finds two look-alikes, neither of them this village:
  • "Up Muhal Chhalala" (012725): Manali sub-district, Naggar block, 191 people, 125.39 ha, 6 km from Manali (handbook p. 58).
  • "Up Muhal challogee" (012769): Kullu sub-district, Naggar block, 77 people, 33 km from the nearest town. The Parvati-corridor villages sit in the Kullu block, not the Naggar block.
• villageinfo.in gives "Chhalal" as the gram panchayat of the census village Sosan. The district's current list of gram panchayats has no Chhalal (it lists Kasol, Manikaran, Jari, Pinni and Shaat among the Kullu block's 70). Not used.

• Spellings: Chalal (HimbuMail, the Zomia Collective's documentation), Chhalal (The Tribune, 2018), Chhalaal (OpenStreetMap).
• HimbuMail (3 December 2025) calls the arrested man "a key kingpin" and does not name him. The article gives neither the label nor a name. Its list "Kullu, Manikaran, Malana, Tosh, Kulka, Pulga, Kulga" of valleys is not repeated: "Kulka" and "Kulga" are not identified.
• The Tribune (2018) names the Russian national who died in 2011. The article does not.
• A. F. P. Harcourt (1871, p. 64) describes a route from Manikaran along the right bank of the Parvati that "at Chulaul village ascends the Kundee Pass" and goes on to Malana. The 2026-08-31 research pass read "Chulaul" as Chalal. The route matches the modern Chalal–Rasol–Malana track, but no source read equates the two names, so the article does not use it. Harcourt's text could not be re-opened this session (archive.org is filtered on the workstation).
