Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label, signed by Bon as the collector, reads Lan Mát, 10 Maii 1883. (Cult.) (Lan Mát, 10 May 1883, cultivated) and names the plant Gai = Cannabis, giving Gai as its name. The catalogue keeps the remark Cult. The plant was a male, gathered at Lan Mát in Tonkin. The label records no use. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1883. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label and the catalogue. The sheet does not show what the crop was grown for, what became of it or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because a single gathering does not establish what the crop was grown for or whether its cultivation continued.

Label reading

Read from the museum's scans at full resolution (P06884277, 3336 × 5063 pixels; P06884282, 3386 × 5133 pixels).

  • Collector label (both sheets; printed frame, filled in by hand in the same hand): HERBARIUM MISSIONIS TUNQUINI OCCIDENTALIS. / Urticaceæ / Gai = Cannabis / Cannabis sativa (masc.) / 2113 (H.N.) Lan Mát, 10 Maii 1883. (Cult.) / Ipse legi H. Bon. A pencil 3 at the top right of the label on P06884282.
  • Museum label (both sheets): HERB. MUS. PARIS. / Plantes du Tonkin méridional. / Le R. P. BON, 1883–1891.
  • Barcodes. Herbier Muséum Paris P06884277 and P06884282.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted. Bon's labels use Lan Mát for a mountain or group of mountains (in montibus Lan Mat, in monte Lan Mat), and one of his 1884 labels reads Monts entre Lan Mat et Lat Son. Lạt Sơn lies in the former Kim Bảng district of Hà Nam, but no gazetteer consulted places Lan Mát itself, and the label gives no collection point.

The province field takes Ninh Bình Province. The abbreviation (H.N.) on the label is not expanded there; Bon's other labels read prov. Ha Nam, and Hà Nam province was merged into Ninh Bình on 16 June 2025. The colonial name is left to this note.

Editorial treatment

Two sheets, one accession. Both sheets carry the same number, date, place, sex and hand, so they are one gathering. P06884277 is the infobox image because it was read from the full-resolution original; the second sheet is shown in the article's gallery.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's H. Bon. The Harvard botanist index gives him as Henri François Bon (1844–1894), and the prose links that form.

Name. The local name field holds the label's Gai as written, without diacritics. The label's family, Urticaceæ, is the placement of the period and is quoted, not corrected.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue leaves out the label's name Gai and the sex of the plant, and spells the place Lan Mat without the label's accent.
