Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The field slip, in German, reads Cult. in hochgeleg. Feldern (cultivated in high-lying fields) for the plant gathered at Meit'an-ts'ao, Nanch'uan, on 14 September 1891, and gives the name Huo ma tzŭ (a Wade-Giles romanisation; the slip gives no characters). It names no use and no variety. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1891. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because a single gathering does not establish a landrace.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (4912 × 7360 pixels). The two readings agree on every line.

  • Printed label as on Bock 668 (1891).
  • Field slip (German, squared paper): 909. / Huo ma tzŭ. (the last letter read once as ŭ, once as ü) / Cult. in hochgeleg. Feldern / Meit'an-ts'ao. Nanch'uan / 14 Sept 91.

Huo ma tzŭ is a Wade-Giles romanisation that fits 火麻子, a name for hemp seed or the plant; the slip gives no characters, so the page keeps the romanisation.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted. Meit'an-ts'ao was not found in any gazetteer consulted, and Nanch'uan is a district. The province field takes Chongqing, into which Nanchuan passed on 1 December 1997; see Talk:Bock 668 (1891).

Editorial treatment

Collectors and title as for Bock 668 (1891): the plants were gathered by Rosthorn's Chinese assistants and the collection reached Oslo through Bock.

Locality. The locality field takes the slip's two names, Meit'an-ts'ao, Nanch'uan.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue reads the place as Nanch'nan; the slip reads Nanch'uan.
  • The catalogue leaves out the slip's name, cultivation note and village.
