Bock 668 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered at Nanch'uan, then in Sichuan and now a district of Chongqing, China, on 29 August 1891. The printed label credits the gathering to local people and its sending to C. Bock and Arthur von Rosthorn. The Natural History Museum, University of Oslo holds the sheet as O-V-2164525.[1] The field slip gives the plant's name as Huoma ts'ao.
Collection and locality
The printed label reads Museum botanicum Christianiense. Plantæ chinenses in prov. Setchuen ab incolis collectæ, a C. Bock et A. v. Rosthorn communicatæ: Chinese plants collected by the inhabitants of the province of Setchuen and communicated by C. Bock and A. v. Rosthorn.[2] A field slip written in German in ink gives the number 668, the name Huoma ts'ao, the place Nanch'uan and the date 29 Aug 91.[2] The catalogue gives the locality as Prov. Setchuen, Nanch'nan, the date as 29 August 1891 and the collectors as C. Bock and A. v. Rosthorn, number 668.[1]
Recorded local name and use
The slip names the plant Huoma ts'ao. Its last line states that the plant was used for the preparation of something; the word naming the product could not be read with confidence.[2] A small slip in Chinese is tied to the stem; its characters are not legible in the published image.[2]
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries a tall plant pulled up with its roots, with large palmate leaves and a flowering top. The printed label is completed by hand Cannabis sativa L., and the catalogue records the plant under that name.[2][1] A second gathering sent by the same partnership from Nanch'uan two weeks later is Bock 909 (1891), recorded as cultivated.
