Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The Missouri label and the label on NAS00290136 read Planted for fiber; also adventive; the label on NAS00295378 reads Sometimes escaped, but usually planted for fiber. All three describe a vigorous annual up to eight feet, widely distributed, at Hsin Chi in August 1948, and none says whether the plants on the sheets were planted or had escaped. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from the Missouri image (2000 × 3000 pixels, through GBIF's image cache).

  • Label (printed, typed entries): Distributed by the Herbarium of the University of California / CENTRAL HOPEI PLANTS / Sulu Hsien, Hsin Chi 辛集 / Cannabis sativa L. / Vigorous, coarse, much-branched annual to 8 feet. Planted for fiber; also adventive. Flowers white / Widely distributed. / Kay H. Beach No. 48 August 15, 1948.
  • Packet with a slip bearing the male sign (♂).
  • Nanjing sheets, read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's images (NAS00290136, 1,000 × 1,440 pixels; NAS00295378, 1,004 × 1,440 pixels). On both, the typed label CENTRAL HOPEI PLANTS / Sulu Hsien, Hsin Chi 辛集 (by hand) / Cannabis sativa L. / Kay H.Beach No. 48 August 15, 1948. NAS00290136: Vigorous, coarse, much-branched annual to 8 feet. Planted for fiber; also adventive. Flowers white. Widely distributed.; a brown packet; pencil #63; stamped number 403289. NAS00295378: Vigorous, coarse, much-branched annual to eight feet. Sometimes escaped, but usually planted for fiber. Flowers white. Widely distributed.; a glassine packet; pencil 63; stamped number 532211. HOPEH province stamps; the stamp of the herbarium of the Jiangsu Institute of Botany (江蘇省植物研究所標本室). The readings agree; one reads the first stamped number as 493289.

Georeferencing

The coordinate, 37.94, 115.21, is Wikidata's point for Xinji (辛集, Q1015480, which carries the aliases 束鹿 and 束鹿縣), 37.94231, 115.21181, rounded to two decimals; SRTM gives 36 m there. The English Wikipedia states that Xinji was formerly Shulu County and became a county-level city in 1986. The point stands for the town the label names, the present city centre; no source read says that the old Shulu seat stood at the same place. The province field takes Hebei. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 5 km.

Editorial treatment

Image. Missouri publishes the image under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0; it is read and cited, not uploaded.

Collector. The collector field takes the label's Kay H. Beach. The Harvard botanist index lists a K. H. Beach who collected in China, the Philippines and the United States from 1940, with no first name or dates; the name is not linked.

Sex. The slip in the packet bears the male sign; the label itself does not state the sex of the plant, so the page reports the slip only.

Three sheets, one accession. The Missouri and Nanjing sheets share the label's place, collector, number and date. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue leaves out the label's description and the note on fibre.
  • The label on NAS00295378 reads Sometimes escaped, but usually planted for fiber; the Missouri label and NAS00290136 read Planted for fiber; also adventive.
