Page scope
Bashkir Trans-Urals is a Growing Area: a named area that sits below the Southern Urals growing region. It covers the east of Bashkortostan on the eastern slope of the southern Urals and the plain at its foot: the weedy hemp of the cereal fields and the wild hemp found on abandoned fields and village land.

Discussion

Why the area is on the map

  • Weed science: Yamalov, Shaikhislamova and Mirkin (2007) put the range of the hemp field-weed association Cannabio–Sinapetum arvensis over the whole Uchaly forest-steppe district and the northern and central parts of the Sibay steppe district, from 500 relevés of 2002 and 2003. Khasanova and co-authors (2019) described a second association with hemp as a diagnostic species from relevés of 2003 and 2004 in Uchalinsky and Baymaksky districts, and wrote that the older association now occurs only locally in the north.
  • Drug-control and police reports, a separate kind of source from the weed science: wild hemp in Baymaksky District in 2005, 2008 and 2019 (18 hectares on six abandoned fields in 2019) and in Sibay in 2007 and 2010 (Bashinform); a woman detained in Ilchino, Uchalinsky District, with what the police took to be marijuana, which she said she had gathered from wild hemp (the republic's police, September 2019). The two kinds of source name the same districts.

The name

"Bashkir Trans-Urals" (Башкирское Зауралье) is the name the weed-science sources use for the east of the republic, between the Uraltau ridge and the West Siberian Plain.

Growing status

The status is Active. The weed-science fieldwork runs to 2004, and the police found wild hemp in Baymaksky District and at Ilchino in 2019. Khasanova and co-authors (2019) describe a decline of the older hemp association, not its end, and no source says that hemp has stopped growing in the area.

How the border is drawn

  • The border is a proxy drawn on whole administrative units of Bashkortostan: Uchalinsky District (OpenStreetMap relation 398525), Abzelilovsky District (398526), Baymaksky District (398527) and the urban okrug of Sibay (1850010), about 14,600 km² together.
  • Uchalinsky and Baymaksky districts are where the two kinds of source meet: the weed-science relevés and the police reports. Abzelilovsky District lies between them and inside the range that Yamalov and co-authors (2007) give for the hemp association, the Uchaly forest-steppe district and the north and centre of the Sibay steppe district; without it the area would be two separate pieces.
  • Zilairsky and Khaybullinsky districts, to the south-west and south, are not part of the area. They are named only in a 2005 drug-police report, and Khaybullinsky District lies in the Akyar steppe district, which the 2007 range of the association leaves out.
  • The infobox point (53.43, 58.68) is the centre of the shape.
  • The border is not drawn from accession or news points.
  • The map line leaves out ground above 4,000 m (SRTM elevation) and land that ESA WorldCover 2021 maps as bare or sparse vegetation, permanent snow and ice, or open water at its outer edge only, and leaves out lakes of 500 km² or more. Along the outer edge that ground comes to less than half of one per cent of the land, so the line keeps to the district boundaries. Rivers and the reservoirs on them are inside the line.

Accessions

No accession is attached to the area.

Sources

  • Weed science: Yamalov, Shaikhislamova and Mirkin (2007) and Khasanova, Yamalov, Lebedeva and Shigapov (2019), both in Растительность России. The two papers share an author, S. M. Yamalov.
  • Bashinform (18 July 2005; 18 July 2007; 10 June 2008, by Elmira Sabirova; 6 July 2010; 24 July 2019, by Galina Bakhshieva): reports of the federal drug-control service in the republic to 2016 and of the republic's police after.
  • The republic's police (Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Republic of Bashkortostan): the Ilchino release, cited from its copy in the Internet Archive. The release prints the day and month, 12 September, but no year; the archive saved it in October 2019, and the neighbouring releases on the site date from 2019.

Not used

  • A study of weeds in maize crops (2020) found weedy hemp in three of four zones of the eastern Urals, across Chelyabinsk, Sverdlovsk and Kurgan oblasts and the Bashkir Trans-Urals, without saying in which province each find lay.

Open questions

  • Whether Zilairsky and Khaybullinsky districts belong to the area: the 2005 drug-police report names villages there, and no other source does.
