Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The sheet records the plant in the Philippines and, on its upper label, as grown in gardens. It gives no date, no locality within the country, no legible local name and no legible use. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned. It does not establish a landrace, a continuing population or a living holding.
Label reading
The labels were read from the published scan at 2000 and 4000 pixels wide. What can and cannot be made out:
- Stamp. M BARTHE - PHILIPPINES, then reçu en and a year whose first digit reads 1 and last digit 7; the two middle digits are blurred. The same printed wording, equally blurred, is on another Barthe sheet from the Philippines, P00170213 (Maesa, labelled Nº 5). The catalogue transcribes the stamp of a third, P00369136 (Solanum erianthum), as Reçu en 1857 (GBIF occurrence 438818365). The year on this sheet may be the same, but it cannot be read here.
- Upper label. Cultiva en huertas; the first word could equally end -vo. Either reading means grown in gardens, and the article gives both.
- Lower label, heading. A word in parentheses read as Ganja. An ink blot lies over the opening bracket and the first letter, and the fourth letter could be a g (Ganga). Nº1 stands to the right, and the catalogue's number 1 corresponds to it.
- Lower label, body. Three lines of faint cursive Spanish below a rule. The first two may read Esta erba tiene mucho / effecto como ... (this herb has much effect, like ...). The word after como and the whole third line have not been read. None of the body text is used in the article.
Georeferencing
The stamp and the catalogue give only the country, and the catalogue's locality field reads [illisible]. No province, locality or coordinate is asserted. Most of the other Philippine sheets the catalogue credits to Barthe are localised Manille, but this sheet's own locality cannot be read, so Manila is not assumed.
Editorial treatment
The title follows the catalogue, which holds the label's Nº1 as the collector number. The number does not identify a gathering on its own: the catalogue gives the number 1 to another Barthe sheet from the Philippines (P00369136) and the number 5 to two more (P00170213 and P00360986), so it appears to number items within a consignment.
The collection date is left blank and the title reads (s.d.). The stamp's reçu en gives the year the museum received the sheet, a custody date, not the gathering. If a better image confirms the stamp's year as 1857, it becomes a firm latest limit and the title would read Barthe 1 (by 1857).
The collector is recorded as J. Barthe from the catalogue's Barthe, J.; the stamp reads M BARTHE. The catalogue credits 97 sheets to Barthe, J., 84 of them dated 1857, from places that include Manila, Hong Kong, Hakodate, the Strait of Tartary, Réunion and the Cape (GBIF search). Several of the 1857 sheets record médecin de la frégate la Sybille (doctor of the frigate Sybille) beside the name. This sheet carries no such note, and it is not attributed to the frigate's doctor here.
These notes were recorded during accession preparation. Source citations remain in the article. Éloise 18:38, 4 October 2026 (+07)
