Discussion

Inclusion

Kew's catalogue names the object Women's money bag and files it under the plant name 153.04 CANNABACEAE Cannabis sativa. The word hemp does not appear on the catalogue page; Kew's entry on GBIF adds the remark Indigo-dyed hemp. Kew's help page says the collection classifies its specimens by plant family and genus; this one is classified under Cannabis. The bag is an object made from cannabis, and the plant name carries no hedge, so the attribution is Stated. The infobox quotes the plant name, the only wording on the catalogue page that names the plant.

Evidentiary scope

The entry gives the Hmong and north-east Thailand as the place, a collector who obtained the bag in 1991, and a donor, and no maker, no date of making and no village. It documents a money bag of indigo-dyed hemp from Thailand, obtained by its collector in 1991; it does not say who made the bag, how it was used, or where its fibre was grown. It documents no plant, population or living holding, and landrace, feral and conservation fields do not apply to an artefact.

Editorial treatment

The collection date is not the date of making. Kew's collection date, 1991, is when the collector obtained the bag: its help page defines the collector as the person who first obtained a specimen. The date made is left empty. The date acquired is 2012, from the entry book number 1.2012.

Culture and place as recorded. Kew's geography line reads Hmong, NE Thailand. It names the Hmong where other entries name a place, so the culture field gives Hmong and the place field quotes the line in full. The catalogue does not say whether Hmong people made, used or sold the bag. The place is quoted as Kew gives it; the catalogue names no province or village.

The GBIF remark. Kew's entry on GBIF carries a remark the catalogue page does not show: Indigo-dyed hemp, cost about 30p. The article quotes it and draws nothing further from it.

Names. The field collector and the acquired-from field both give J. Balfour-Paul, Kew's Balfour-Paul J in initials form; the catalogue gives the name in both of its fields. The donor is not further identified.

The donor number. The donor number field reads 14b. What series it belongs to is not recorded; it is given in the article only.

One entry, three objects. Kew gives the entry number 1.2012 and the donor Balfour-Paul J to this bag, to the hemp muslin Textile (Kew EBC 91920) and to the hemp fibre EBC 91993 (by 2012). The catalogue does not say what links them beyond the shared donor and entry number.

Image. Kew publishes four photographs of the bag through GBIF under CC BY 4.0. Two show it with a colour chart and Kew's tag, and one is distorted towards its edges; the view of the bag alone is used.
