Page scope
Argolis treats the regional unit of Argolis, in the north-east Peloponnese, as a cannabis growing area: the early hashish growing round Argos and the cultivation police have found there since. Argolis as an administrative unit and the town of Argos are separate subjects; a page on the administrative unit would take the title Argolis (regional unit).

Discussion

Why Argolis is a growing area

  • Afendoulis's Pharmacology (1875), as Stefanis, Ballas and Madianou quote it (1975, p. 311), names "the areas of Argolis and Navpaktos" among the places where cannabis was recently grown in Greece.
  • Gkotsinas (2020, p. 365) writes that the first sources on hashish growing in Greece date it to the 1870s and place it in the area of Argos. The sources he cites are G. Papavasileiou's article in the Εφημερίς της Εταιρείας Υγιεινής (October 1884), the 1887 report of the mayor of Orchomenus and the newspaper Καιροί (25 October 1891).
  • Gkotsinas (2020, p. 373) names Argolida with Arcadia and Messenia as the farmers the 1920 law's provision favoured.
  • Naftemporiki (10 September 2024) reports a plantation of 387 plants in a coastal forest area of Argolida.

Growing status

  • The status is Active: the 2024 report describes cannabis grown in Argolida. On the historical sources alone it would be No longer grown, for the reasons set out on Talk:Mantineia (the 1920 ban, as Gkotsinas describes it). The 2024 report names no place below the regional unit and says nothing of the plants' origin.

Extent and border

  • The map border is approximate. It is the regional unit of Argolis as mapped in OpenStreetMap (relation 937635, fetched 19 October 2026), about 2,857 km²; the infobox area is rounded from it. Argos, Nafplio and Ermioni lie inside; Tripoli and Corinth lie outside.
  • No source read narrows the area within the regional unit: the historical sources speak of "Argolis" and "the area of Argos", and the 2024 report gives only "a coastal forest area in Argolida".
  • The point in the infobox lies in the plain of Argos, not at a field.

Source discrepancies

  • Afendoulis, as quoted, places Navpaktos "in the Peloponnesus". Navpaktos (Nafpaktos) is on the north shore of the Gulf of Corinth, in Aetolia-Acarnania. The article quotes him without taking Navpaktos as a growing place.

Sources

  • Stefanis, Ballas and Madianou (1975). Read in full. Afendoulis's Pharmacology is quoted from this chapter and was not read in the original.
  • Gkotsinas (2020). Read in full; page numbers are the printed ones.
  • Naftemporiki (2024). Read in Greek; no byline. The English title is a translation.

Sources not used

  • A newspaper history of the crop (Efimerida ton Syntakton, 3 June 2017) gives 2,289 stremmata for Argolida and Corinthia together in 1911. The figure has not been checked against the census and is not used.
  • A 2016 blog transcription of I. Th. Bakopoulos's 1914 report on Mantineia mentions trial plots in Ermionida. The report was not read in the original and is not used.
