Argolis is a landrace cannabis growing area in the Peloponnese of Greece, drawn on the regional unit of Argolis. The earliest sources on hashish growing in Greece date it to the 1870s and place it round Argos.^[1]^: 365 In September 2024 police uprooted 387 cannabis plants in a coastal forest area of Argolis.^[2]

Hashish growing before 1920

Th. Afendoulis wrote in his Pharmacology of 1875 that Indian hemp was grown in India and Egypt and "recently also in Greece in the areas of Argolis and Navpaktos in the Peloponnesus".^[3]^: 311

From the north-east Peloponnese the crop spread to other parts of Greece, while the province of Mantineia in Arcadia remained its stronghold.^[1]^: 366 Law 2107/1920 banned the growing, trade and use of hashish in Greece. It kept a provision of the 1906 tax law that directed fines to public works in the growing districts, which the historian Kostis Gkotsinas describes as a concession to the farmers of Arcadia, Argolida or Messenia.^[1]^: 373

Cultivation since 2000

In September 2024 the drug squad of the Attica security police, with other units, found a cannabis plantation in a hard-to-reach coastal forest area of Argolis. The 387 plants were uprooted on the spot, and four people were arrested.^[2]
