Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label, a printed form of the Yokohama Nursery Company's herbarium, records the plant as Tokyo. cult. (Tokyo, cultivated) in Aug. 1908, with the Japanese name Asa. (hemp). The printed heading names the nursery's herbarium, not the place the plant grew. The label gives no habitat, no use and no collector. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1908. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because a single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from GBIF's cached copy of Edinburgh's image (814 × 1200 pixels; the garden's own image server did not answer).

  • Label (printed form, hand entries). HERB. THE YOKOHAMA NURSERY CO., LTD. / YOKOHAMA, JAPAN. / No. (blank) / Cannabis sativa L. / Japanese name: Asa. / Locality: Tokyo. cult. / Date: Aug. 1908.
  • Readings that differ. The place was read Tokyo once with Tokiyo allowed, and Tokyo (probable) once. A single pencilled letter in the top right corner, read N or V, is not used.

Georeferencing

The point 35.68, 139.76 is the centre of Tokyo as OpenStreetMap maps it (node 265018692, place=city), in Chiyoda ward. In 1908 Tokyo named the city of Tokyo, made up of fifteen wards from 1889 until 1932, and also the prefecture around it; the city is the usual sense and is taken here, and the prefecture cannot be excluded. The point stands for the old city as an area, not the place the plant was grown. No source read gives the old city's area. The five present-day central wards (Chiyoda, Chūō, Minato, Bunkyō and Taitō) reach 3.4, 4.1, 6.5, 6.8 and 7.0 km from the point; the old city's wards also took in ground in neighbouring present-day wards, and the uncertainty allows for that. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 9 km.

Editorial treatment

Two gatherings. As for Anon. s.n. (1907), which carries the same printed form: the year, month and locality differ.

Place. The province field takes Tokyo, which contains the old city on either reading of the label. No municipality is entered, because the old city is split among several present-day wards. The locality field gives the label's Tokyo. cult. in full.

Image. The page carries no image: the label was read from GBIF's cached copy of the garden's image, which is too small to upload.

Source discrepancies

  • GBIF's record for the sheet carries no collector, date or country; the garden's catalogue gives only the name and Japan. The date, the place and the Japanese name are from the label.
