Evidentiary scope

The label records a cannabis plant, with its Japanese name アサ (asa), gathered on 2 September 1905, on a specimen dealer's printed form; its place line appears to read Kyoto. It gives no habitat and no note on cultivation, so the accession is classified Other; no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from NSII's image of the sheet (605 × 768 pixels).

  • Label (printed form). Pencil No. 491 (the No. faint) / 桑 科 / Moraceae. / ア サ / Cannabis sativa L. / 明治卅八年九月二日採集, printed from right to left, with a printed 產 at the right end of the line / a blurred place line of four characters, read 日本京都 by both readings, each with low confidence / 島津製作所標本部撰集.
  • Holder's slip (lower left, printed frame). Herb. No with a stamped number struck through and a second stamped number above it, both blurred; its printed foot line is not read.
  • Barcode label. PEY 0036145. A blue stamp at the top right reads Class.
  • Readings that differ. The year was read 明治卅八年 (Meiji 38, 1905) once and 明治廿七年 (Meiji 27, 1894) once, the second reading marked as not secure; the catalogue's date, 2 September 1905, agrees with the first, and the page follows it. The pencilled number was read 491 once and could not be read the other time; the catalogue gives 491.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The place line under the date is blurred in the published scan, and its reading is uncertain: both readings of the sheet give it with low confidence. The catalogue gives 京都 (Kyoto), which names both the city and the prefecture. The specimen department of Shimadzu that issued the label was in Kyoto, so the line may be the maker's seat, not the place where the plant grew. The province field gives Kyoto Prefecture, which holds either reading.

Editorial treatment

Collector. The label is the printed form of a specimen dealer, the specimen department of the Kyoto firm Shimadzu Seisakusho, and names no collector. The firm made up and supplied the specimen; it is not taken as the collector, so the collector field is empty and the title takes the Anon. s.n. form. The department began making specimens in 1891, was set up within the firm in 1895 and closed in 1944, and its business passed to Kyoto Kagaku in 1948 (Japanese Wikipedia; Kyoto Kagaku's history page). No source read says that it made botanical sets, or how its sheets reached China. The pencilled 491 is taken to be the dealer's specimen number, and is given here and in the article only.

Local name. Asa, the label's katakana アサ, goes in the local name field.

Place. The province field takes Kyoto Prefecture and the locality field Kyoto, the catalogue's reading of the place line.

Image. The page carries no image. NSII publishes the scan with no licence of its own, and GBIF gives the occurrence CC BY-NC 4.0, which the wiki does not upload under; the label was read from NSII's image and the scan is cited.

Source discrepancies

  • GBIF gives the year only; the day and month are the label's and the catalogue's (NSII).
  • NSII and GBIF give the number 491, the label's pencilled number, which the page takes for the dealer's specimen number.
