Stebbins s.n., Somerset East is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected at Somerset East in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, in February 1908 by Inez Stebbins. The Willard Sherman Turrell Herbarium (MU) holds the sheet as 000330446.[1]
The record
The catalogue gives the collector as Inez Stebbins, the date verbatim as February 1908, the province as Eastern Cape and the locality as Somerset East, to which it adds the note that the town was renamed KwaNojoli in 2023.[1]
The sheet
The specimen is a bare stem fragment. Its label is a modern printed card headed WILLARD SHERMAN TURRELL HERBARIUM (MU) and Plants of Southern Africa, giving the name as Cannabis sativa with the family (Moraceae), the locality as SOUTH AFRICA: Somerset East, and the collection line as leg. Inez Stebbins / February 1908. The original label is not on the sheet, so the card is a transcription of a source that cannot be checked here.[1]
Specimen and identification
The determination is Cannabis sativa L. The printed card places the plant in Moraceae, a family assignment now superseded by Cannabaceae.[1]
