Southern Huila is a cannabis growing area in the south of the department of Huila, in southern Colombia, in the upper valley of the Magdalena between the Central and Eastern Cordilleras. It is made up of seven adjoining municipalities in which marijuana was eradicated between 2008 and 2018: San Agustín, Pitalito, Timaná, Acevedo, Suaza, Guadalupe and Garzón.[1] The area belongs to the Cordillera Central (Colombia) growing region.

Early reports

In 1961 the Colombian delegation to an inter-American narcotics meeting in Rio de Janeiro, drawing on a report of the secret police, named Huila among the departments where marijuana was grown.[2]: 215 In January 1973 a National Police report to the president named the coffee region, from the department of Caldas to the department of Huila, as one of five regions of marijuana cultivation in Colombia.[3]:

Since 2000

In May 2015 the National Police reported that carabineros and criminal investigators, checking for illicit crops in the vereda (rural district) of San Antonio, in rural Pitalito, had found 4,998 marijuana plants on a plot of two hectares that looked at first sight like a plantation of coffee and plantain: the cannabis was hidden among both crops. The plants were pulled up by hand and, the ground being rough, burnt on the spot.[4]

About 23 hectares of marijuana were eradicated in the seven municipalities between February 2008 and January 2018, in 27 entries of the Ministry of Defence's open data. San Agustín accounts for about 9.3 hectares in 15 entries (2008–2018) and Guadalupe for 8.5 hectares in four (2008 and 2016), among them entries of three and four hectares on consecutive days in February 2008. The rest is in Acevedo (1.9 hectares), Garzón (1.5), Suaza (1.0), Timaná (0.5) and Pitalito (0.5).[1]
