Qila Abdullah is a landrace cannabis growing area in Qila Abdullah District, in north-western Balochistan, Pakistan, on the border with Afghanistan. Since September 2025 the provincial excise department, the district administration, the Frontier Corps (North) and the Anti-Narcotics Force have destroyed cannabis crops in Dobandi tehsil and at Gulistan Karez and Sagai in Gulistan tehsil.[1][2] The reported areas range from several acres to 600 acres of bhang (cannabis) in a single operation.[3]

Crop destruction in 2025

In September 2025 the North Zone office of the provincial excise and anti-narcotics department in Quetta, with the district administration and the police, destroyed bhang and opium poppy grown on several acres at places in Dobandi tehsil and elsewhere in Qila Abdullah.[1] The department's "Bhang Elimination Campaign 2025" began on 1 November. In an operation under it, about 40 acres of charas, bhang and opium crops were destroyed in various parts of the district; the plants were burned.[4]

The Balochistan Pulse reported on 4 November that a phase of the campaign at Gulistan Karez and Sagai, assisted by the Anti-Narcotics Force, had cleared 310 acres of cannabis in two days. Drones, satellite mapping and heavy machinery were used to find and destroy the fields. A departmental spokesman said that 270 acres had been destroyed by hand and that another 40 acres had withered for lack of water. The same report put the illicit crops destroyed across the province in the drive so far at more than 2,054 acres.[2] The next day Express Urdu reported that the Frontier Corps (North), the Anti-Narcotics Force and civil agencies had destroyed bhang grown on 600 acres in the district. An operation was going on against bhang on a further 650 acres in Balochistan; the deputy commissioner said the land would be watched to stop the crop being sown again.[3]

In the middle of November the deputy commissioner, Munawar Hussain Magsi, said that opium poppy and bhang on 2,000 acres had been destroyed in a joint operation of the district administration and the law-enforcement agencies. He added that drug factories in Gulistan tehsil had been raided and that 21 factories making ice and charas at Nurak Sulaiman Khel had been set on fire.[5]

Campaign of 2026

In October 2026 the excise department scheduled its "anti-bhang campaign 2026" in the district: in the areas of Dobandi from 15 to 22 October and in Gulistan and Qila Abdullah from 21 October to 1 November. It asked the Chaman Scouts, the Muslim Bagh Scouts and the district police for men. It reported destroying standing crops of bhang and charas at places in the district.[6] By 20 October raids had been going on at places in Dobandi for three days.[7]
