Fiji Parliament passes the Counter Narcotics Bill 2026 establishing a Counter-Narcotics Bureau
Fijivillage reported that Parliament passed the Counter Narcotics Bill 2026 unanimously on the evening of 1 October 2026. Moving the bill, the Minister for Policing, Ioane Naivalurua, said Clause 11 establishes the Counter-Narcotics Bureau as Fiji's specialised national counter-narcotics institution and Clause 99 creates an offence of narco-terrorism punishable by life imprisonment. He said the Illicit Drugs Control Act 2004 takes a predominantly offence-based approach. In the debate, Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj said Fiji is no longer dealing solely with localised marijuana cultivation.
