Banarhat police destroy cannabis grown behind vegetable crops at Salbari in Jalpaiguri

Uttarbanga Sambad reported, under a Gayerkata dateline, that Banarhat police acted on a tip-off and raided the Salbari-1 gram panchayat area of Banarhat block on Thursday. The report said the raids covered the villages of Purba Duramari and Keranipara and that cannabis plants growing at various points were cut down and destroyed. According to the report, villagers were growing the cannabis in house yards and adjoining plots screened behind bottle gourd, chilli and brinjal plants rather than in open fields. Police sources told the paper the estimated value of the destroyed cannabis was several lakh rupees. The report gave no plant count and no area figure.
