Cooch Behar police release drug seizure figures giving 850.92 kg of ganja seized to May 2024

Uttarbanga Sambad reported that the district police released figures for the International Day Against Drug Abuse. The paper said the figures showed 29 people arrested for drug trafficking in Cooch Behar between January and May of that year and 27 cases registered in the district. The superintendent of police told the paper that regular operations against narcotics were running. The paper reported, from police sources, that 850.92 kg of ganja had been seized in transit from Cooch Behar up to May, alongside more than 2 lakh bottles of cough syrup, 1,798 yaba tablets, 1,791 g of brown sugar and about 46 kg of opium. The paper's own account describes the district as a corridor for trafficking into Assam and Bangladesh and reports allegations that surveillance is insufficient, neither of which is attributed to the police release.
