Jammu and Kashmir's CSIR-IIIM runs India's first licensed medicinal cannabis cultivation project at Jammu

On 23 July 2023 Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh, visiting the cannabis cultivation farm of the CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine at Chatha near Jammu, said the institute was running India's first cannabis medicine project. The Jammu and Kashmir government had granted CSIR-IIIM a licence to cultivate cannabis for scientific purposes, and the institute was carrying out protected cultivation on a one-acre site alongside climate-controlled glasshouse research on improving cannabinoid content. The project, a public-private partnership with the Canadian firm IndusScan, aimed to develop export-quality medicines for conditions including cancer pain, epilepsy and diabetic pain, subject to further approvals for good-manufacturing-practice production. The institute reported a repository of more than 500 cannabis accessions collected from across India. Reported by the Press Information Bureau on 23 July 2023.
