Himachal Pradesh police prepare to buy drones to locate cannabis grown in remote high-altitude areas

The Tribune reported on 24 September 2019 that the Himachal Pradesh police department was preparing to buy drones to locate cannabis grown in remote high-altitude areas. Superintendent of Police (Narcotics) Ashok Kumar said two companies had been shortlisted, that diesel-operated bush cutters were being supplied to the police for the first time and that ₹15 lakh would be made available for manpower and machinery to eradicate cannabis, including ₹5 lakh each for the Kangra, Mandi and Shimla zones. The report says an eradication drive had cut cultivation on private land to 5 per cent, with 95 per cent grown on high-altitude forest land in Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur and Chamba districts. It lists Malana, Manikaran, Banjar, Sainj and the Chanderkhani Pass among cultivation areas in Kullu district.
