Uttar Pradesh cabinet permits hemp cultivation for research, medicinal and industrial use

On 30 October 2018 the Uttar Pradesh cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, allowed the cultivation of hemp for research and medicinal purposes, following Uttarakhand, which had become the first state to permit hemp cultivation the previous year. Farmers were permitted to grow the crop under the supervision of the state Excise Department. A government spokesperson said the decision was taken to improve farmers' financial condition, as part of a commitment to doubling their income by 2022. The crop was permitted for research, medicinal and industrial use, with the hemp stalk usable for products such as rope, apparel, geotextiles and packaging, and the seeds for oil, flour and animal feed.
