Chengtu General Population 1921 is a historical seed accession of Cannabis sativa that the United States Department of Agriculture received from Chengtu (today's Chengdu), in Sichuan, China, on 19 September 1921 and numbered plant introduction (PI) 54361.[1] No seed of the lot survives. The National Plant Germplasm System, whose database carries the department's introductions, says the accession "no longer exists and can not be requested".[1]
The lot
The department's printed inventory lists the lot as hemp from Chengtu, Szechwan, presented by P. M. Bayne through J. Burtt Davy of Cambridge, England, and received on 19 September 1921. The only notes with the shipment were the Chinese names of the seeds; this one, translated for the department by T. Tanaka, is Hua ma tsu, "Fire hempseed".[2]
