Chengtu Plain General Population 1911 is a historical seed accession of Cannabis sativa that the United States Department of Agriculture received from the Chengtu Plain, in Sichuan, China, on 8 February 1911 and numbered plant introduction (PI) 29523.[1] No seed of the lot survives. The National Plant Germplasm System, whose database carries the department's introductions, says the accession "no longer exists and can not be requested".[1]
The lot
E. H. Wilson, of the Arnold Arboretum, presented two hemps from western China that the department received on 8 February 1911. Of this one, Hoa ma, his note in the printed inventory says it "is cultivated extensively as a winter crop on the Chengtu Plain, especially around the cities of Wen Chiang Hsien and Pi Hsien", and that its fibre went into coarse cloth and cordage and was sold to other parts of China by way of Chungking and Ichang.[2] The other is Man ma, from the mountains west of Kwanhsien (NPG-CHN-SIC-0019110002).
